The Wild Robot: Inspiring Us to Protect Each Other and Our Planet
How DreamWorks Animation and NBCUniversal are Championing Sustainability Through Their Latest Release
October 02, 2024
This past weekend, The Wild Robot from DreamWorks Animation became the No. 1 film globally at the box office, and marks the 25th time a DreamWorks Animation title has taken the top spot-on opening weekend at the domestic box office.
In The Wild Robot, its main character Roz is a resourceful robot and embodies a drive to protect the natural world and wildlife, always completing her tasks with a deep sense of purpose, which stands as a shining example of Comcast NBCUniversal’s dedication to sustainability. Beyond the powerful environmental themes throughout the film, the filmmakers and cast also partnered with Universal’s GreenerLight Program to make a positive impact in real life. As part of the film's release, Universal Pictures collaborated with Academy Award® winner Lupita Nyong’o to create an in-theater and online PSA, encouraging audiences to take inspiration from Roz and take small, meaningful steps to care for our communities and environment.
NBCUniversal at Climate Week NYC
NBCUniversal made a strong impact at Climate Week NYC by hosting a special screening of The Wild Robot at the first-ever Climate Film Festival. The event included a Q&A with producer Jeff Hermann and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), offering insights into the film’s environmental themes.
Attendees also heard from a nature attorney who shared real-life stories of wildlife protection. As Climate Week continued, NBCUniversal executives joined industry leaders for panel discussions on sustainable storytelling and production practices. The week also saw the debut of the Sustainable Entertainment Alliance's first industry-wide climate storytelling sizzle reel, narrated by Meryl Streep. This collaboration reminds us that we all have a role to play in protecting our planet.
