NBCUniversal Gives Back in 2023
February 07, 2024
At NBCUniversal, there’s a strong culture of volunteerism. Looking back on our 2023, NBCU employees achieved great progress across our social impact efforts, including volunteering and service leadership, empowering storytelling and corporate giving.
Volunteering and Service Leadership
Through NBCUnites, our social impact initiative that allows employees to partake in volunteer experiences and projects, more than 13,000 NBCUniversal employees were able to volunteer across various programs contributing to more than 550 projects across six continents. Employees created 17,750 care package and supply kits for the homeless and children in hospitals, packed 12,000 meals for those experiencing hunger, collected 5,285 seasonal items and 4,300 cards of encouragement for those in need and revitalized more than 50 outdoor spaces in New York and Los Angeles, London and more.
We launched our NBCUnites Ambassador Program, a one-year service opportunity that allows an employee to make an impact as an emerging leader within their business through coordinating volunteer projects and mentorship and skill building opportunities. This year, twenty-four ambassadors across thirteen of our businesses completed nineteen projects.
NBCUniversal’s Talent Lab, which offers a suite of robust skills-learning opportunities for employees, partnered with NBCUnites to help employees learn more about nonprofit board service, skills-based consulting and how to be a more equitable leader in the workplace. Our bi-annual board service training program, SERVE, reached over 100 participants to date; PRO BONO, our skills-based volunteering initiative, expanded internationally with over 160 nonprofits and 445 employees participating since inception; and, 30 employees joined our new two-day service immersion experience, INSPIRE.
Empowering Storytelling
To date, our signature Creative Impact Lab has donated over $7 million in media inventory, $560,000 in grants to nonprofit creative agencies, with 60 NBCU volunteers engaging with 66 apprentices. Read more about the Lab in its inaugural report here.
In 2023, NBCU revived its public service campaign, The More You Know, with conversations around pressing topics, including food insecurity, the importance of reading, the benefits of mentorship and more. You can access resources on these topics and watch the PSAs here.
Corporate Giving
Our NBCUniversal Local Impact Grant program awarded $2.5 million to more than 81 nonprofit organizations in 11 NBC and Telemundo owned television station markets. For the first time, the grant program provided unrestricted funds to nonprofits – allowing these organizations to create the most efficient solutions for the communities they serve. Local Impact Grant recipients include Hillside Food Outreach, Kids in The Spotlight, Dion’s Dream, Rock To The Future, GEMS Camp, Mental Health Collaborative, Inc, Children in Placement, Mary House, EatWell Exchange, El Timpano and Arms Wide Open.
NBCUniversal donated more than $2.2 million through our Matching Gift Program, which provides employees an opportunity to donate to organizations of their choice with the added benefit of a double match for the company.
