NBCUniversal Employees Give Back in April for National Volunteer Month and Beyond

More than 4,000 NBCUniversal employees came together to give back and make a positive impact in our communities

VolunteerMonth

May 08, 2024

Throughout the month of April, NBCUniversal’s culture of volunteerism was on display as employees globally participated in various volunteer month activities across NBCUniversal offices.

Comcast NBCUnites Volunteer Month & Cares Day

Comcast NBCUnites empowered employees to give back, supporting more than 140 of our nonprofit partners through projects facilitated by NBCU’s social impact team. Employees were also given the unique opportunity to organize events with organizations of their choosing.

Volunteer opportunities for employees ranged from mentoring high school students interested in media with Minds Matter NYC, to cleaning local parks for Earth Day. Employees participated in packing STEM kits for hospitalized children, socializing dogs at local animal shelters and building skateboards for children in foster care with Foster Love.

To celebrate the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, volunteers in several cities packed more than 1,000 swag bags and decorated hundreds of cards to be given out to the athletes participating in the Special Olympics.

Internationally, NBCU colleagues across 22 countries volunteered on more than 67 unique projects increasing hours by 16% from the year prior.

With over 11,000 hours of service and incredible impact made near and far, volunteer month was a huge success across the board.

SERVEtogether

In partnership with the NBCU Talent Lab, Comcast NBCUnites hosted SERVEtogether, a learning and development experience for employees who represent NBCUniversal on nonprofit boards.

35 participants gathered at 30 Rockefeller Plaza to share their experiences and enhance their service leadership skills over three days. Combined, this group has completed more than 3,000 hours of service work for their respective organizations.

Bigger Than One Month — Part of Our Culture

At NBCUniversal, community service has been a key component of our employee engagement strategy. Hilary Smith, Executive Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility, recently shared her insights in an op ed for Fast Company about the positive impact of corporate volunteerism.

Volunteering offers employees an opportunity to participate in meaningful service activities during their day, which ultimately brings the workforce together in a collaborative, feel-good environment. Comcast NBCUnites offers an array of volunteering opportunities all year long including:

  • Each month, NBCUnites hosts a service project that employees can participate in virtually or in-person. November and December feature Season of Service, when a series of service projects roll out across NBCU’s global footprint.

  • In addition to our SERVEtogether program, NBCUnites offers 2 other CSR-specific training and development programs through the NBCU Talent Lab — PRO BONO and INSPIRE — which allow employees to give back while engaging in skill-building that supports their inclusive leadership growth at the company.

  • The NBCUnites Ambassador Program taps employee volunteers who plan and execute at least one service project for their team with a nonprofit of their choosing.

  • The Creative Impact Lab’s special sauce is the employee volunteers who offer their creative expertise as mentors on storytelling projects for nonprofit organizations that need help with marketing.

  • Similar skills-based mentorship opportunities also take place with NBCUnites nonprofit partners, such as Urban Arts and America On Tech, which help empower the next generation of storytellers and tech professionals.
