For three years, NBCU Academy, a free, award-winning education program, has helped distinguish the NBCU News Group for its commitment to helping students and young professionals of all backgrounds develop new skills and advance their careers in journalism, media, and technology. Partnering with various organizations, including 45 academic institutions across the country, the program provides funding, resources, training, development, and access to the News Group’s world-class journalists.

“NBCU Academy was created by NBCU News Group Chairman Cesar Conde to help fulfill our mission of cultivating the next generation of talent in journalism, media and tech,” said Yvette Miley, EVP, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, NBCU News Group. “As part of that program and ongoing commitment, we are thrilled to introduce NBCU Academy’s Storytellers Program, which provides invaluable on-the-ground training and mentorship for participants.”

The Storytellers Program is an immersive training initiative where three early-career journalists (the Storytellers), are paired with an NBC News reporter, correspondent, or executive to provide mentorship and guidance. Over the course of a year, participants will cover impactful stories across the U.S., bringing fresh perspectives and untold narratives to the forefront. These selected reporters will collaborate to produce custom video and article content for the Storytellers vertical, featured on NBCUAcademy.com. The inaugural program provides young professionals with an opportunity to enter the media industry, aligning with NBCU Academy’s goal of fostering a sustainable pipeline of access and opportunity for individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

NBCU Academy, in partnership with NBCUniversal Local, introduced the NBCU Academy Local Associates Reporters Development Program. This initiative nurtures early-career television journalists, including producers, reporters, multimedia journalists, weather presenters, and experienced print journalists seeking to transition into television roles. Specifically designed to engage journalists in local markets across the nation, the inaugural cohort of this program is based in six NBC and Telemundo owned stations located in Philadelphia, Miami, Houston, Sacramento, Orlando, and Hartford

2024 promises to be another impactful year for NBCU Academy, with the introduction of new programs complemented by established flagship initiatives such as the Next Level Summit, Original Voices, the Equity Lab, online courses and a substantial presence at journalism conferences and conventions.
