Scranton, Pennsylvania Commemorates The Office with New Mural

On October 6th, the city officially unveiled the mural, titled “The Story of Us.” Sitting at 86-feet wide and 27-feet tall, the colorful painting includes 17 of the show’s beloved characters, and celebrates the iconic series that began nearly twenty years ago.
Dunder Mifflin Opens its Doors on NBC
On March 24, 2005, Americans were first introduced to Steve Carrell’s Michael Scott and his loyal colleagues at the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. The show ran for nine seasons as its characters found their way into the hearts of fans across the globe, and now, onto a massive mural in real-life Scranton.
The Office Day in Scranton
Residents of Scranton were invited to the mural unveiling to take part in a special themed photo-opp and a contest to win a Lego set of The Office, as well as hear remarks from the artist, Kala Hagopian. NBC 10’s Philly Live interviewed the Philadelphia-based artist, who spoke about her inspiration and hard work that went into the new mural. The Mayor of Scranton and County Commissioner also commemorated the moment by declaring October 6, 2023 as “The Office Day” in Scranton and Lackawanna County.
The Legacy of The Office
Winning four Primetime Emmy Awards during its run, and then later becoming the face of the streaming movement, The Office has maintained relevance and found new fans across multiple generations. In 2018, Steve Carrell hosted Saturday Night Live, and reunited some of his old Dunder Mifflin coworkers during his monologue. In 2022, the Minions took over Dunder Mifflin to promote the Despicable Me spinoff movie, Minions: The Rise of Gru, starring Steve Carrell. From national fan conventions to full-scale immersive set replicas, The Office has become a staple in television culture.
